What is the difference between Fibre and Midband Ethernet?

Midband Ethernet is a copper service, meaning traditional telephone lines are used to deliver the service. Midband is subject to the typical problems with copper (line noise etc). Fibre (Metro Ethernet) is delivered through the streets and to your building via fibre optic cable. This is the most resilient medium for communications transmission available today.  The most important difference between Midband and Fibre are:

  • With Midband, the further you are away from the telephone exchange the slower you connection speed will be. Fibre does not have this problem.
  • Midband is limited in it’s upgrade capacity. To upgrade speed you will need to install more coppper telephone lines, which can be a very long process. Once you get to 8 copper lines you typically cannot add more and your speed cannot be increased. On the other hand, fibre speed can be upgraded by a simple programming change on our network.
  • Midband is limited to 40Mbps, Fibre can go up to 1000Mbps

Both Midband and Fibre have their places. Midband is a great entry point to a symmetric service.

Are there different types of Midband Ethernet?

Yes, we offer two kinds of Midband Ethernet:

Midband Lite – This is an “up to” service. Meaning that the final sync speed cannot be guaranteed before installation. Speeds are available up to 20Mbps/20Mbps. This is a great value product, especially if you are close to a telephone exchange.

Midband – This is a guaranteed service meaning that if you buy a 15Mbps/15Mbps service you will get this speed. Speeds are available up to 40Mbps/40Mbps. This product is more expensive than the Midband Lite product.

What is the difference between Midband Lite 4-wire, 6-wire, 8-wire services?

Each set of wires increases the likelyhood of acheiving the speed you require. Think of it this way; A typical DSL service has 2-wires. If we increase the available wires then there are more capacity your connection will have.

If it turns out that using a Midband Lite 4-wire still doesn’t achieve a suitable speed, what is the process to upgrade to a 6 or 8 copper wires?

A new install would be required if you underestimate the number of wires required. If you are uncertain about the number of wires that will be required, you should consult with ZettaNet. If the site is on the threshold of not having enough capacity, an extra pair should be selected at the time of ordering.

Is this a fibre optic service?

No, this is an Ethernet Over Copper (EoC) service.

How much faster is this product than DSL?

This service is designed for business and individuals requiring a high upload speed. This is not acheiveable with DSL which typically as an upload speed of between 834Kbps and 1Mbps.

Can I get higher speeds than 10Mbps?

Yes we can provide Midband up to 40Mbps (at selected exchanges) or fibre optic services up to 10Gbps.

Can ZettaNet provide a point to point service without internet? Just connect me to a data centre or another office?

Yes. This is priced upon application.

How many IPs do you provide with this service?

We provide you with a static non-portable /30 (1 Usable) IP. More are available for purchase if you require them.

What kind of router is required?

You will require ethernet based router. We recommend a Juniper SRX100, or Cisco 2821. We can supply this as part of your Midband service.

Can I put voice over this service?

Yes. We can provide you with a voice service or you can use another provider.

What is the target availability for this product?

This is a business grade service. The target avilability is 99.8%

What is the lead time for installation?

Typically 21 business days from acceptance of your order.
